While driving through Central, the taxi driver suddenly rammed into the PLA barracks in Central Hong Kong and smashed its car brakes. After being arrested by the police, the driver said he had been chased and rammed into the barracks.
The driver earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of damage and dangerous driving, and his lawyer pleaded with him that the defendant was suffering from delusion.
The case was sentenced in the Eastern District Court this morning (6th). The magistrate sentenced the defendant to 12 months of probation, and must pay 20,000 yuan to the People’s Liberation Army and suspend trading for 6 months.
Defendant Yuan Weijie, 53 years old, pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal damage, dangerous driving and entering the restricted area without a permit. He alleged that he entered the restricted area without a permit in Hong Kong on June 5, 2021, namely the Central Barracks at 2 Edinburgh Place, Central.
He was also charged with dangerous driving of a taxi and damaging the brakes belonging to the barracks without legal excuse, with intent to damage the property or regardless of whether the property was damaged.
The case alleged that at 6:20 pm the same day, the defendant drove his taxi westbound on Lung Wo Road in Central. He drove outside the barracks gate and suddenly turned left and smashed into the barracks’ car brake. The car’s brake was slammed into a 90-degree bend and stood guard. The soldiers immediately came to order the defendant to stop and get off the car.
After receiving the report, the police arrived at the scene to take over, and were warned to admit to the crime.
The defense pleaded earlier that the defendant was suffering from delusions and committed the crime because of an onset of illness.
