US President Joe Biden is expected to accuse his predecessor Donald Trump today (Thursday) of attacking his supporters on Capitol Hill, in a speech marking a year on the occasion of the attack on the heart of American democracy. Biden, who will speak in Congress, is expected to say that Trump had a "unique responsibility for the chaos and carnage" that took place on January 6 last year, while lawmakers discussed ratification of his election victory.
In the blaze of Trump, who refuses to acknowledge to this day that he lost the election and continues to argue unsubstantiated into widespread forgeries, his supporters attacked Congress with events that shocked the world. Symbols of power, including then-Vice President Mike Pence, fled for their lives from the mob that broke through the shaky security systems. The attack ended in the deaths of five people, including a Capitol police officer. 725 people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in riots in the past year.
Trump, who may try and run again for the job in 2024, planned to convene his own press conference today.
However, he reportedly canceled the incident, which was scheduled to take place at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, after his advisers warned him against negative media coverage.
A spokeswoman for him said it was "not surprising" that Biden would spend this day "trying to further divide our country".
This, she claims, is to make voters forget the rising inflation and crime and the closure of schools due to the corona plague.
