But my feelings of participation in their situation do not block my feelings of horror at what is happening in these industrial coops.
Now that they are empty, you can see in the photos the mountains of secretions under the battery cages. These miserable chickens live five inches above a mountain of their feces, in a space that allows no movement at all. No trip, no pecking at the ground in search of a stray grain. They are born in a dungeon and there they live their entire short and cruel life cycle, all of them a laying machine, with no right to the happiness of a little rooster of a short flight from here to there, digging in the ground, wallowing in the dirt. None of that. Even the most horrible prisoners of the world get half an hour in the yard to move. The chickens, who have done no harm to anyone, just hatched from their egg, do not even get it.
I see the bird epidemic as a sign.
I believe in signs.
