The next steps in the pandemic will be discussed today (January 7th) at a federal-state conference.

An expansion of the 2G-Plus regulation is also in the room.

This could particularly affect the catering industry.

If this is implemented, only those restaurants that have been vaccinated or have recovered and that can also show a negative test are allowed to visit.

For those who have been boosted, the obligation to test would no longer apply.

But criticism is being voiced from the industry.

The head of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga), Ingrid Hartges, calls the 2G-Plus regulation for gastronomy "a disaster for cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants

" of companies fear for their existence.

A 2G-Plus scheme would also eliminate walk-in customers.

A 2G-Plus scheme in restaurants could serve as an incentive for some people to get boosters and thus reduce their protection against infection.

Hartges sees this critically.

The hospitality industry shouldn't suffer when it comes to incentivizing a third vaccination.

2G-Plus-regulation: Politics largely for the expansion to the catering trade

Politicians, on the other hand, are largely positive about the expansion of the 2G-Plus regulation. Bremen's Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte and Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (both SPD) expect a quick agreement on the 2G-Plus rule for gastronomy. "I do not expect any major points of contention," said Bovenschulte on Friday in the ARD "Morgenmagazin". There will be a joint regulation on 2G-Plus in the catering industry and an "urgent recommendation" for FFP2 masks in local public transport and in retail.

Giffey also said on RBB-Inforadio that she is assuming that the Prime Ministers will adopt this 2G-Plus regulation.

"We now have a development here that says the 'plus' is defined as either tested or boosted," said Giffey.

People with a booster vaccination would "be able to go to the restaurants without a test".

The more people are boosted, "the less problematic it becomes," added Giffey.

The alternative would be a complete closure.
