The inflation rate in the euro area reached its highest level in 25 years in December, at 5% over one year, still propelled by soaring energy prices, according to a first estimate released Friday by Eurostat.

Never has the European Statistics Office recorded such a figure since the start of its estimates in January 1997 for the 19 countries that have adopted the single currency.
In November, inflation in the euro zone had already broken a record, at 4.9%.
