To shape its future, the European Union has launched an extraordinary exercise in democracy, giving European citizens the opportunity to formulate recommendations that lawmakers are committed to follow.
The closure of this Conference on the Future of Europe in May, imagined by Emmanuel Macron, will be a key moment for France, which chairs the Council of the European Union for six months.

Having failed to fail on several occasions, due to the pandemic and internal quarrels between institutions of the Union, the fact that the exercise takes place is already a success, insist European diplomats and officials.
The idea of extending the experience is already germinating, with a more lasting framework for consultation.
