The Government of Guatemala said that it is preparing for a possible migrant caravan that could leave Honduras on January 15, although the authorities of that country assure that –– for the moment–– these are "rumors. ".

The Guatemalan Migration Institute reported this Thursday in a statement that it held a meeting with various public institutions, international organizations and even members of the diplomatic corps to attend to the possible arrival of Hondurans to the country.

"Within the protocol it is established that checkpoints will be installed on the migratory route, prioritizing strategic points that allow the identification of people who enter irregularly and without presenting the requirements established by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance", it was stated explained in the statement.

The Guatemalan Migration Institute did not say how it obtained information about the new contingent that could leave Honduras.

An additional request for information from CNN remained unanswered on Friday.

In Honduras, the Communications Office of the National Migration Institute told CNN this Friday that "for now we only have information on rumors of a convocation on social networks. We are monitoring."

As has happened on previous occasions, the calls have been made through social networks and mobile messaging applications.

At least one group on the internet was promoting a new caravan that would leave on January 15 from San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

This week, Itsmania Platero, an activist and promoter of human rights in Honduras, told local media that she had information that a new group of migrants would leave for Mexico, and not for the United States.

This Friday, Platero told CNN that he had information that the migrants would depart from various border points, but did not give further details.

The last migrant caravan that left Honduras for the United States did so in March 2021 and was dissolved upon arrival in Guatemala.

Two months earlier, another massive group was detained mostly in Guatemalan territory, where the government - citing concerns about the covid-19 pandemic - deployed security forces that blocked their way and even staged clashes against them.
