Memmingerberg - Memmingen Airport approached the million mark again in the past year: After a corona-related minus in the previous year, 2021 was characterized by consolidation.

Now one hopes to reach the level of 2019 again this year.

After a balance of 690,780 passengers in the previous year, Memmingen Airport was able to climb again in 2021 and recorded an increase of 42 percent with 980,503 passengers.

“Despite all the restrictions, the desire and will to travel was clearly noticeable among our passengers,” explains Airport Managing Director Ralf Schmid.

The airlines flying to Memmingen have also done their best to maintain an attractive offer and even to expand it to include a few new destinations.

The new flight connections from Memmingen to Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria, and to Lappeenranta in Finland recently celebrated their premiere.

A total of eleven new destinations were added.

Some new destinations

Last year, the airport again contributed to the fact that medical staff, nursing and harvest workers as well as students were able to reach their places of work and study. Visiting friends and relatives also continued to play a major role. Aid flights by the Bundeswehr attracted a lot of attention. The Air Force Airbus A310 MedEvac landed several times at Memmingen Airport to take patients from several intensive care units from Bavaria on board and take them to northern federal states for treatment.

The new year has now started with optimism, and it is hoped that it will again reach the previous record of around 1.7 million passengers from 2019. "Corona continues to be a major challenge," says Ralf Schmid, "we have to wait and see how things develop." Nevertheless, one hopes that the situation will calm down in early summer. This year, in the 15th year of scheduled flight operations in Memmingen, people are cautiously optimistic that they will be able to continue climbing. "It remains to be seen what effects the coming corona waves will have on tourism and air traffic," emphasizes Ralf Schmid. In the past few months, however, Memmingen Airport has further expanded its position as southern Germany's leading low-cost airport and has impressively demonstrated thatthat it is one of the most important air traffic locations in the south of the republic, which also plays a significant role for the neighboring neighbors in Austria and Switzerland.

More comfort for passengers

The largest construction project of the past year should also make its contribution to further growth: The completed extension of the baggage hall with arrival area now offers passengers more comfort. This year, further expansion and optimization measures are to follow on the first floor of the terminal. The new ILS 06 instrument landing system will also be put into operation. In addition, the rainwater retention basin is to be completed. Further work is planned on the apron areas. The aim this year is to take a step closer to achieving the declared goal of enabling climate-neutral flight operations. Ralf Schmid: “Our goal is zero! 0 percent CO2 by 2030 by reducing and offsetting CO2 emissions related to flight operations.“Detailed information can be found in the recently published sustainability report from Memmingen Airport.

Last year Sofia came first in the favor of passengers, followed by Skopje and Palma.

On March 27, Ryanair will connect Memmingen Airport with Santiago de Compostela for the first time.

Then it goes to the northern Spanish city twice a week (Sunday and Thursday).

53 destinations can already be booked with four airlines from Memmingen for the coming summer.
