The head of the Corona crisis team in the Chancellery, Major General Carsten Breuer, has been under personal protection since taking office.
The soldier, who is supposed to develop and coordinate new strategies for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the fight against the virus, is apparently particularly at risk for attacks by corona deniers.
As his spokesman confirmed to SPIEGEL, the general will be accompanied by military police officers on his public appearances.
No information was given on the specific risk situation.
Breuer himself said to interlocutors that he had never expected such security and threats.
Recently there had been repeated threats against politicians because of the corona measures.
There were calls for murder against the heads of government of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Michael Kretschmer (CDU) and Manuela Schwesig (SPD).
"I trust the security authorities and will not be intimidated," Schwesig said recently in an interview with SPIEGEL.
Breuer has headed the crisis team that Scholz set up, since the beginning of December.
As head of the Territorial Tasks Command, he was previously responsible for all domestic operations of the Bundeswehr and thus also for the control of the entire Corona emergency aid of the troops (read a portrait of Breuer here).
