Today, civil and popular activities carried out a afforestation campaign in the vicinity of the shrine of the Prophet Habil in Zabadani in the countryside of Damascus, which included planting more than 900 olive trees and other fruitful species.

During SANA's follow-up to the planting works, Majed Salloum, who comes from Jaramana, explained with the people of his area to participate in the campaign that they chose to plant olive trees as they enjoy permanence and greenery, indicating that the project has a charitable character, as the fruits of the trees will be allocated to needy families.

Young Shadi Barakat stressed the need to encourage young people to engage in civil and community initiatives to preserve the environment and vegetation cover, especially in light of the exposure of many lands during the past years to fires, which led to the loss of large green spaces.

Mowaffaq Abu Shash joined the campaign with his child to teach him the importance and necessity of planting trees, as he put it among Barakat’s recitations that the campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of the tree as a symbol of giving, production and beauty.

In turn, the head of the Syrian Cycling Club, Samer Al-Awam, indicated that he joined the campaign because of its importance in beautifying the area, as it is a tourist destination and is visited by many visitors.

The Assistant Director of Plant Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Hazem Al-Zaila, explained that the ministry's role in these campaigns is to supervise the planting of the tree from a technical point of view, especially with regard to the depth of the pit and the circumference around the base of the tree.
