The Hong Kong Medical Association pointed out today (7th) that the government announced earlier that it would expand the "vaccine bubble", including the need for injections in restaurants for dine-in meals. This has caused many community vaccination centers to be full recently and the public has to wait in long queues.

The Medical Association urged the government to reopen the vaccination centers that had been closed earlier, and pointed out that in particular, Fubitai’s vaccination centers were insufficient, and advocated considering arranging private hospitals to provide vaccination services.

Regarding a number of senior officials and legislators who were still attending the birthday banquet held by Hong Weimin, deputy to the Hong Kong People’s Congress, on January 3, the President of the Medical Association Cai Jian described as “the people are not allowed to light the lights” and pointed out that the Medical Association was originally scheduled to be held in February. The anniversary banquet was also cancelled due to the recent epidemic. "The (Medical Association) banquet stated that it is not allowed to sing. (Hong Weimin) was completely unclear about medical matters on his birthday, and there was no explanation or advice. There is this incident first."

The Medical Association held a press conference today and made a number of recommendations on the epidemic in Hong Kong.

Cai Jian believes that there is currently no mechanism for patients to undergo physical examinations before vaccinations. "It is difficult to convince citizens to get injections." He suggested setting up an examination center in general outpatient clinics to allow citizens to check the third and higher levels before vaccination, if necessary. The free ECG examination is believed to relieve the public's doubts.

Zeng Qiyin, co-chair of the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee of the Medical Association, pointed out that after the authorities announced the "vaccine bubble", they "underestimated the number of people who had to eat pasta for three meals a day," causing long queues at the vaccination center.

He believes that now is the right time to reopen the vaccination centre that was cancelled earlier.

He also believes that the epidemic has changed drastically in the past 10 days, and the current vaccination rate in Hong Kong is not ideal. Primary school and kindergarten students have not implemented vaccination, and only about 20% of them are 80 years old. On the contrary, the vaccination rate in foreign countries is relatively high. Minor claims may not be applicable in Hong Kong.

Chen Yicheng, the co-chair of the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee of the Medical Association, pointed out that the situation in South Africa and the United Kingdom has shown that more and more young children have to be hospitalized after being infected with Omicron. However, currently only Kexing can apply for vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 in Hong Kong. See related application.

He suggested that the government promptly require pharmaceutical companies to apply for lowering the age of vaccination for Fubitai vaccine, so that children and parents have more choices.

The government also needs to actively seek parental consent and straighten out the logistics arrangements for the mass vaccination program in schools.

He also pointed out that a British study showed that people who received three doses of the vaccine could reduce the risk of hospitalization by 81%.

However, the number of vaccine doses currently booked in Hong Kong may not be enough for 7 million people to receive three doses of vaccine. Therefore, the government is required to ensure that there is sufficient vaccine supply in Hong Kong, and the elderly should also receive the third dose as soon as possible.

Regarding whether it is necessary to suspend classes or arrange to work at home, Cai Jian believes that there is no need to arrange work at home now.

Zeng Qiyin believes that the government’s announcement of measures such as bans on food is decisive, saying bluntly that "to win the battle, the strategy may be different from the previous anti-epidemic measures." Including going to work, going to school, and taking the opportunity to undergo screening. "It may be painful in a short period of time, but you can live a normal life in the middle and long term."

He also emphasized, "As long as the fire is extinguished in the next three weeks, I believe that a relatively normal Chinese New Year can be celebrated."
