The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Muhammad Hassan Qatana, inspected the progress of implementing the agricultural production plan for the 2021-2022 agricultural season in the areas of Rastan, Al-Qusayr and Al-Houla in the countryside of Homs.
In a statement to reporters, Engineer Qatna confirmed that the government continues to support the agricultural sector in terms of securing production requirements such as fuels, fertilizers and seeds, indicating that the condition of the lands planted with wheat is good and reassuring, and the planned areas have been cultivated.
Engineer Qatna announced that the issue of distributing specific types of fertilizers will be addressed, according to the request of a number of farmers.
The Minister of Agriculture was briefed on the stages of rehabilitating the Houla Plain irrigation network project due to its importance in securing irrigation for large agricultural areas in the Houla area and neighboring villages.
In turn, the Director of Water Resources in Homs, Engineer Ismail Ismail, confirmed that the Houla Plain irrigation network will be put into service after its rehabilitation at the beginning of next March, and irrigates an area of 1,136 hectares through a network consisting of two main canals in addition to sub-channels, benefiting from it the villages of Taldu, Taldehab, Kafr Laha and some small villages, pointing to the The Hula Dam currently contains about 5 million cubic meters of water out of a total maximum storage of 15 million cubic metres.
Director of Homs Agriculture, Engineer Younis Hamdan, indicated that the implementation rate of irrigated wheat cultivation amounted to 82 percent of the total planned area of about 12 thousand hectares, and the implementation rate of rainfed wheat cultivation was 76 percent of the total planned area of 24 thousand hectares, while the implementation rate of irrigated and rainfed barley cultivation reached About 87 percent of the entire planned area of more than 38 thousand hectares, pointing to the continuation of cultivation until the implementation of the entire agricultural plan.
A number of farmers and livestock breeders in the villages of Al-Qusayr, Al-Rastan and Al-Houla demanded the necessity of providing fuel at reasonable and sufficient prices to implement the agricultural plan and securing sufficient fodder for cows, sheep, poultry and fish.
Engineer Bassam Parsik, Governor of Homs, stated that this visit comes as part of a series of tours to see the agricultural situation in Homs Governorate, with the aim of reaching a good agricultural season, and soon the areas in the eastern countryside of Homs will be visited.
