On the occasion of the federal-state conference on Friday, Markus Lanz dedicated his broadcast to the current pandemic situation around the coronavirus.

Also present: Virologist Hendrik Streeck.

Hamburg - It takes almost 45 minutes until Markus Lanz asks the virologist Prof. Hendrik Streeck, who has been part of the new Expert Council of the Ministry of Health under Karl Lauterbach since the traffic light government, the question that probably burns most people.

When did the point come, according to the moderator, when “the thing” becomes endemic and the “new normal” begins?

Streeck remains objective: There will be no end, there will be no deadline, he clarifies.

Rather, one should assume that there will be an “expiry”, “a gradual transition”.

Streeck refers to the falling number of infections in spring and speaks of "hard work" that is required to establish a permanent procedure.

Streeck counts the constant adaptation of the vaccines to new variants - but people also have to learn how to become more crisis-proof.

Streeck announces good news about the new Omicron variant: The virus would currently reduce its dangerousness.

In Great Britain, thanks to Omikron, the number of patients who would have to be treated in clinics has fallen by 30 percent, and in Denmark by as much as 50 percent, explains Streeck of the images displayed by Lanz.

"Markus Lanz" - these guests discussed with:

  • Karin Prien (CDU)

    - Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education

  • Dr.

    Gregor Gysi

(Die Linke) - Member of the Bundestag, lawyer

  • Prof. Hendrik Streeck

    - Director of the Institute for Virology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn

  • Eva Quadbeck -

    deputy editor-in-chief of the

    Rheinische Post

    , head of the

    RND

    capital city editorial office

According to the latest studies from abroad, it has been shown that although more people are sick, the risk of hospitalization or even intensive treatment is decreasing and can be further reduced by booster vaccinations.

For the latches it means to stay on the ball.

In the future, fewer intensive care beds would presumably be needed, but more beds in normal wards.

Streeck: "We have to reckon with an enormous wave - also among the vaccinated".

Yes, the expert predicts, in most cases it will feel like a normal cold.

A second measure towards normality, which is to be nodded off at the federal-state conference, is the possibility of shortening the quarantine times.

Even with a symptom-free infection, everyone should be able to test themselves “freely” after five days.

Even with a low viral load in the throat, the risk of infection can be neglected, says Streeck.

In addition, the schools must remain open: Just because there is an infected student does not mean that "the whole class does not have to stay at home," emphasizes the virologist.

Streeck is against the introduction of a general vaccination requirement

The Bonn virologist speaks out at Lanz against the introduction of mandatory vaccinations, which will soon be voted on in the Bundestag.

An eradication of the coronavirus - as achieved or aimed at with measles or smallpox - is not possible.

Instead of nationwide vaccination, vaccinating high-risk patients in the winter months is the better way, but this should continue to be formulated as an offer.

The other Lanz guests, including the moderator, do not find compulsory vaccination desirable either.

The political journalist Eva Quadbeck speaks of the "most hypocritical debate in 20 years of political reporting" that she has personally under her belt and warns of a loss of confidence if the obligation to vaccinate is introduced contrary to the government's previous promises.

Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Education, Karin Prien, objects that compulsory vaccination without a vaccination register, which does not exist in Germany, makes little sense.

Left-wing MP Gregor Gysi expresses another point of criticism: With up to 20 million unvaccinated people, the lawyer is angry, the group to be controlled is simply too large.

Gysi comes to Berliners: "Yes, how many regulatory agencies want to employ?"

Gysi sums up: “You shouldn't decide anything that you can't implement!”.

Gregor Gysi railed against the compulsory vaccination: Do not decide anything that cannot be implemented!

In the second part of the Corona talk, Gysi cleverly points to the topic that his next book will also be about, on which he is currently writing: "30 percent of our population have lost all trust in the government," denounces Gysi and sees the reason also in the failure of politics and goes back to the general criticism of the system: “The shortage”, according to the MP, is the fact that politicians are not interested in non-voters because only voters decide on the distribution of seats. So more and more people would feel "forgotten".

Markus Lanz is downright delighted by the clear words: "What a wonderfully honest sentence is that!" That spurs Gysi on, who promptly continues to preach: Politicians use the wrong language too often, a certain dishonesty is now socially acceptable .

Gysi: “You no longer state your real motives, but those that you think the majority of the population supports.” But the population has a fine instinct for these rhetoric tricks.

This is increasingly unsettling people.

Prien doesn't want to leave it like this: “I think it's a bit false to say that you don't need any marketing anymore.” But also admits that she is observing an increasing loss of trust in the population, but does not say how she does wants to meet.

Conclusion of the “Markus Lanz” talk

A quick summary of the current corona situation.

The pandemic side is highlighted by Streeck, the social side essentially by Gysi.

All in all, it currently seems that the solution of one problem has created a new one on another territory.
