The alleged double murder of a young couple from Ingolstadt is still unresolved almost 20 years later.

The investigation continues, but there has now been a setback.

Four suspects were recently released from custody.

The public prosecutor does not want to give up.

Investigators hope that the case will continue to be clarified around two decades after the alleged double murder of an Ingolstadt couple (missing since 2002).

Most recently, however, the criminal investigation team and the public prosecutor's office suffered a setback and released four suspects from custody.

The public prosecutor still considers the quartet to be suspicious, as a spokeswoman said.

The skeletonized bodies of the then 21-year-old woman and the then 23-year-old man were discovered in May 2020 in a forest near Kipfenberg in the Eichstätt district *.

Investigators were able to secure DNA from the bones and thus identify the bodies.

The Kripo formed an investigation team to clarify the case.

Double murder of couple also unsolved almost 20 years later - four suspects

Around a year later, arrest warrants were issued against four suspects.

"In the course of extensive investigations and numerous interviews with witnesses, there were indications of four people who could be connected to an unnatural death of the couple," the investigators said at the time.

No further details were given, including the identity of the accused or their relationship with the couple.

In autumn 2021, the investigating judge ordered the release of all four again because there was no longer any urgent suspicion.

The public prosecutor's office has lodged a complaint against the lifting of the arrest warrants, said Chief Public Prosecutor Andrea Grape.

The Ingolstadt district court must now decide on this.

Skeleton of missing couple discovered near Kipfenberg - also bones discovered by a Munich student

At Kipfenberg, there was another major police search in the forest at the end of November 2021 to find the remains of a suspected crime victim.

It was about a 19-year-old student from Munich who had disappeared in the state capital in 1995.

A thigh bone of her was found near Kipfenberg in the summer of 2020 - a few weeks after the skeletons of the missing couple were discovered.

However, despite the spatial proximity, there is no connection between the two cases, stresses Grape.

“It is a very, very strange coincidence that a bone was found again,” she says.
