The CDU is repositioning itself - but there will probably be quite a few familiar faces there.

Among other things, ex-minister Julia Klöckner is apparently planned.

Mainz / Berlin - After the federal elections, ex-Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) had to take action: They announced their retirement from office as the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU leader.

At the national political level, however, Klöckner continues to be fully involved - and will soon probably even take on a new prominent office.

She is to become the new treasurer of the CDU.

CDU: Merz 'wish?

Klöckner is supposed to be the new treasurer

The board of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU nominated the 49-year-old for the post on Thursday evening, as the state party announced on Friday.

In doing so, the state executive "also followed the wish of the designated CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz".

The current treasurer of the CDU is Philipp Murmann.

He has held the office since 2014.

The new CDU leadership will be elected at a digital party congress on January 21st and 22nd - the entire board is at the disposal.

In addition to Klöckner, the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU has nominated three other representatives for the board elections: the Bundestag members Johannes Steiniger and Mechthild Heil and the state politician Dennis Junk.

Merz had won the party's first member survey on the future chairmanship in December.

Formally, however, he too has to be elected by the party congress.

Merz takes over from Armin Laschet, who after his election debacle as party leader and candidate for chancellor had finally initiated his withdrawal.

CDU: Klöckner remains top talent - new election in Rhineland-Palatinate is still pending

Klöckner, in turn, had recently received a new post in the Union parliamentary group: She is chairman of the parliamentary group's working group on the economy in the new legislature.

However, it was only elected with 68.5 percent of the vote - a rather bitter result.

And the former federal minister is also still the head of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU.

But only for a while: the state party has postponed the electoral party conference from November 2021 to March 2022.

It was said in October that "the members across the country want to be given the necessary time they want to openly discuss the course content and personnel."

The Rhineland-Palatinate CDU parliamentary group leader Christian Baldauf already showed interest in the post.

He is also withdrawing from the party's federal executive committee.
