The state of Lower Saxony advocates booster vaccinations for adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age.

But what is the Stiko recommendation actually?

Hanover - On Thursday, January 6, 2022, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health once again advised the vaccination teams of the municipal health authorities about the possibility of booster vaccinations for adolescents.

The recommendation regarding booster vaccinations applies to people between 12 and 17 years of age.

The ministry announced this in a press release.

Booster vaccinations for young people between 12 and 17 years of age: Lower Saxony gives the green light for booster vaccinations

As it is called by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health, the booster vaccination serves to protect young people against the coronavirus. The booster vaccination should also be possible for the 12 to 17-year-old age group with an interval of at least three months from the second vaccination. Of course, only if the parents so wish.

Daniela Behrens (SPD), Minister of Health in Lower Saxony, has already commented on this topic.

“From our point of view, there is absolutely no reason to deny young people between 12 and 17 years of age a booster vaccination.

In view of the rapid spread of the Omikron variant, on the contrary, I am convinced that we should offer a booster vaccination to as many Lower Saxons as possible, "says von Behrens in connection with the third-party Corona vaccination.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends booster vaccinations for people over the age of 18 - doctors do not have to adhere to them

“It is becoming more and more apparent that we need three vaccinations to be as well protected from Omikron as possible.

This applies to adults as well as to young people, "said Lower Saxony's Minister of Health, on the subject of booster vaccinations.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) currently recommends booster vaccinations against Corona for people aged 18 and over.

Many doctors across Germany orient themselves to this Stiko recommendation for booster vaccinations.

In principle, the state of Lower Saxony does not have the option of instructing doctors to offer booster vaccinations to young people between the ages of 12 and 17.

Corona booster vaccination: Almost half of all people in Lower Saxony have already received the booster vaccination

“This freedom of doctors is of course to be accepted. Adolescents and their parents who decide to have a booster vaccination should therefore find out from their general practitioner or their district or urban district whether there are vaccination offers for them locally, "says Daniela Behrens in this context about the booster vaccinations against Corona.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 44.7 percent of people living in Lower Saxony have already received their booster vaccination.

That would correspond to a proportion of more than 61 percent of people with a basic immunization through a completed series of vaccinations including a third vaccination.

The third vaccination is an important measure, especially in connection with Omikron, and it has not yet been finally clarified whether the booster vaccination also provides permanent protection against the corona variant.

Just behind the top: Lower Saxony is in second place nationwide for booster vaccinations against Corona

With regard to the booster vaccinations, Lower Saxony is in second place in a nationwide comparison. Only Saarland is better, where almost every second person has already received a booster vaccination against the coronavirus. If you look at the group of 12 to 17 year olds, 8.8 percent of this age group in Lower Saxony have already received the booster vaccination. In a country comparison, this means third place.

Nevertheless, the incidence figures in Lower Saxony are increasing significantly.

The WHO recently warned not to underestimate the mild course of Omikron.

Even if virologist Hendrik Streeck was cautiously optimistic about a corona end.

The World Health Organization reminded that the Corona variant Omikron kills people.

Meanwhile, Omikron has replaced the delta mutation as the determining corona variant in Lower Saxony since the beginning of the week.

Booster vaccination in Lower Saxony: Look up offers for booster vaccinations in the municipalities and districts

In principle, many districts and urban districts offer vaccination appointments via the Lower Saxony vaccination portal at www.impfportal.niedersachsen.de.

If you need more information about vaccination against the coronavirus or the vaccination offers of the municipalities, you can find it at www.impfen-schuetzen-testen.de.
