A German mountaineer was killed and an Austrian woman seriously injured in an avalanche of snow and rocks near the Aiguille Guillaumet, in southern Argentina, we learned Friday, January 7 from an official source.

The accident happened Thursday afternoon.

A third mountaineer, unharmed, was able to prevent the emergency services.

The German's body was found on Friday.

The 28-year-old Austrian suffers from multiple fractures and was hospitalized in intensive care in El Calafate, 2,750 km southwest of Buenos Aires.

The three climbers were experienced mountain guides, a source from the El Chaltén Andean Center, a mountaineering organization, told AFP.

Located in Patagonia, in the south of the Andes mountain range and on the border with Chile, the Aiguille Guillaumet (2,574 meters above sea level) is part of the chain of Mount Fitz Roy (3,405 m).

It is considered one of the most accessible climbs in the region.

Its name pays homage to the French aviator Henri Guillaumet (1902-1940), hero of the Aéropostale.
