The US space agency, NASA, revealed that its 31-year-old Hubble telescope has set a new record by spending one billion seconds in space.

According to the British Daily Mail, the Hubble telescope has produced some of the most famous astronomical images ever and made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, including determining the age of the universe at 13.8 billion years.

Hubble has seen five missions to serve astronauts to replace and repair components and more than 1.5 million scientific observations. The telescope is expected to continue operating for several more years, despite a number of recent concerns that led to the interruption of all or part of the observatory.

Hubble is a joint project between NASA and the European Space Agency, ESA, which saw regular visits from astronauts between 1993 and 2009, while observations using it led to the emergence of thousands of scientific papers, including new discoveries about the origins of the universe, including the rate of expansion of the universe, the discovery of a fifth moon around Pluto, the discovery of Supermassive black holes are at the core of most major galaxies.

The telescope, which cost 4.7 billion dollars to build, orbits the Earth at about 17,000 miles per hour in low Earth orbit, at an altitude of about 340 miles, slightly above the International Space Station.
