"It cries in my heart as it rains on the city"
,
"The long sobs of the violins of autumn"
,
"These memories, are we going to have to rewrite them?"
.
We have encountered these verses and this music by Verlaine at least once in our life.
They are for the most keen of faithful companions, who make sleepless nights go by in a flash.
The one nicknamed the
"celestial tramp"
wrote his first collection of poetry at the age of 22, entitled
Poèmes saturniens
(1866).
He married Mathilde Mauté in 1870, with whom he had a son baptized Georges, before meeting Rimbaud,
“the man with the soles of the wind”
.
The two men had a shady relationship, which ended tragically when Verlaine shot Rimbaud, injuring his wrist.
The cursed poet was imprisoned for two years, a period which inspired him to three collections.
Verlaine died on January 8, 1896.
Le Figaro
offers you on this occasion a test on his most beautiful quotes.
