Opinion | Protest in Kazakhstan used for coup - Moscow could cut coupon | Israel today

Only in the course of time will it be possible to see whether Tukayev's coup was successful, or whether it was a Pyrrhic victory, which cost a loss of maneuvering space against Moscow.

It was not to be missed that the popular uprising in Kazakhstan against gas prices developed at a meteoric pace into a political protest to oust the "Father of the Nation", former President Nazarbayev from all positions until the Almighty chaos and the Russian-led Expeditionary Force to "restore order".

But according to growing signs, it is possible that alongside the uprising and in the shadow of it, there has been a coup d'etat of President Tokayev against Nazarev and his family, although a coup that has apparently gone awry.

First to the facts.

As of this writing, it is not clear where Nazarbayev is.

Over the weekend it was reported that he fled to China, but he has yet to be seen or heard.

But the two most important figures currently in the making are former nephews of the former president: billionaire Kyret Stibladi, known as the patron saint of Islamism in southern Kazakhstan, and Kazakh deputy head of the GSS, Smith Avish Stibaldi.

The two, according to some reports, were arrested, and yesterday they were joined by another man from Nazarbayev, former head of the KNAB Karim Massimov.

so what happened? According to a weighty theory, Tukayev, who became president in 2019, saw the uprising against gas prices in the west of the country as an opportunity to get rid of the status of President-Bakhilou, who is in the shadow of Nazarbayev and whose family holds power and unimaginable capital. When the riots broke out, Tokayev decided to play into the hands of the protesters: he accepted their demands for the price of gas, made them develop their appetites (the government folds!) And expand to more centers, then fired the government - and ousted Nazarbayev as head of the National Security Council. But then the big problem began: the Nazarbayev family decided to fight back.

This war was expressed in the chaos that prevailed in Almaty, which seemed to have taken a hit on the popular protest. How is it possible, for example, that the city hall in the city burned down completely and the fire brigade did not arrive? How did a few dozen unarmed people take over the airport? And who opened all the weapons depots of the KNAB? The prevailing assessment now is that the Nazarbaev men gave a green light to looting and destruction, and the security forces ordered not to prevent them. And who were the looters? - Poor villagers brought from the spheres of influence of the Islamist nephew Kyrat; and in Russia it is also widely claimed that the Russian GSS, the PSB, also stirred the cauldron to undermine Kazakh stability. on the table.

In any case, when Tukayev saw that he could not trust the security forces, he enlisted the help of a military alliance led by Russia, which rushed to send a delivery force of about 3,000 soldiers for the purpose of "peacekeeping." The president's appeal to foreign countries, the speed with which the shipment was approved, and the fact that it was done in violation of the alliance rules, also raised questions: Russia may not only be openly involved (by sending troops) but also acted secretly to assist The beginning of the riots if there is a riot from Nazarbaev that was not in the pocket of the Kremlin? At least so far, Tokayev - like Nazarbayev before him - has been open to warm relations with China, the EU and Turkey, as well as with Moscow. It is possible that now, especially if he hid a trap for Nazarbaev with Russian aid and fell into another trap himself, he would have to pay a much higher price than he thought for the support. Only in the course of time will it be possible to see whether Tukayev's coup was successful, or whether it was a Pyrrhic victory, which cost a loss of maneuvering space against Moscow.
