New York-Sana

Volker Peretz, Head of the International Organization Mission to Support the Transitional Phase in Sudan (UNITAMS), announced today the launch of preliminary consultations for a political process between the Sudanese parties, to be officially facilitated by the United Nations.

In a statement carried by the United Nations News Center, Unitams said that the talks aimed "to support the Sudanese to reach an agreement to end the current political crisis and agree on a sustainable path forward towards democracy and peace."

In Washington, the International Quartet on Sudan called on the United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to seize the UN initiative to launch consultations between the Sudanese parties to resume the transition to democracy in the country.

In a joint statement published by the US State Department, the four countries expressed their strong support for this dialogue initiative with the assistance of the United Nations and the leadership of the Sudanese.

Sudan is witnessing a political crisis that began on the 25th of last October after the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced the dismissal of the government of Abdullah Hamdok, the declaration of a state of emergency in the country, and the formation of a new Sovereign Council from which many members representing political and partisan forces were excluded.

After about a month, the two parties signed an agreement in an attempt to end the political crisis, but Hamdok announced on the second of this month, and weeks after the agreement, his resignation from his position, stressing that the solution in the country is based on a dialogue that includes everyone.
