The UN Security Council will hold an informal meeting on Wednesday on the latest developments in Sudan, while the mobilization against the military power continues there, we learned Friday (January 7th) from diplomatic sources.

This session will be held in camera.

According to the same sources, it was requested by six of the 15 member countries of the Council: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Ireland and Albania.

A common Council position on Sudan

"is not expected, China and Russia will oppose it

," said a diplomat on condition of anonymity. In the past, these two countries have often emphasized that the situation in Sudan is a matter of the country's internal affairs and does not threaten international security.

The meeting will allow the UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, to brief members of the Council on the situation in the country since the resignation on Sunday of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, according to diplomats.

The latter was the civilian face of the transition launched after the ousting in 2019 of General Omar al-Bashir by the army under pressure from the street, and fear is now keen of a return to dictatorship.

On Tuesday, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Norway urged the Sudanese military not to unilaterally appoint a new head of government.

On Thursday, three demonstrators were shot dead in the capital Khartoum and its suburbs where, like the rest of the country, thousands of Sudanese gathered again to protest military power and demand fully civilian power, doctors say and witnesses.

In total, since the coup d'état led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane on October 25, 2021, the repression of demonstrations against the army has left 60 dead and hundreds injured, according to the Central Committee of Physicians, an association independent.
