The municipality of Münsing had 150 service berries planted in several places in the municipal forest.

It is actually at home in warmer regions of Europe.

Münsing - members of the fruit and horticultural association under the direction of the Third Mayor Regina Reithardt as well as employees of the municipal building yard picked up pick and shovel themselves.

The group provided technical support to Sebastian Schlenz, district forester at the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forests (AELF) Holzkirchen, and responsible for the community forest as well as the experienced forest owner and deputy mayor Josef Strobl.

Balanced maritime climate in the Fünfseenland

The service tree, which can grow up to 25 meters high, is originally at home in the warmer regions of Europe such as northern Italy, but also in the wine-growing climate of Franconia. They also seem to like the balanced maritime climate in the Fünfseenland. "As part of a project of the Zukunftswald Bayern initiative, the Bavarian Forest Administration found around 600 specimens of this tree species in the area around Ammersee and Starnberger See as well as Isar and Loisach," writes Wolfratshausen's district forester Robert Nörr in a press release. Because these service berries differ genetically from others of their kind, they represent “a botanical treasure”. The project aims to research the preservation and breeding of these valuable rarities.

50 of the 150 young service berries come from the offspring project of the Bavarian Forest Administration.

The remaining 100 were donated to the horticultural association from the estate of a dedicated woman from Münsingen.

Tree species copes well with longer dry periods

The service tree is a popular mixed tree species in the forest.

Their wood is valuable and it makes a great contribution to biodiversity in the forest.

"The spring bloom and the fruits in autumn provide valuable food for many insects and birds," explains forester Sebastian Schlenz.

The service tree is also an interesting tree species with regard to climate change and its effects on the forest.

They can cope well with longer dry periods in summer, but can also tolerate frost in winter.

That makes them the ideal admixture in the climate-tolerant future forest.

The Münsingen community forest is to become even more diverse and climate-stable in the future.

“With today's Elsbeeren campaign, we made a nice contribution to it,” said Vice-Mayor Strobl, thanking everyone present.
