In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the perpetrator, 19-year-old Muhammad Suilem, to compensate the victim with NIS 18,000. Palestinian pours a cup of boiling coffee on a young man at the Nablus Gate (hot news)

The Jerusalem District Court sentenced Muhammad Suilem, a 19-year-old Palestinian, to 28 months in prison, who poured a cup of coffee on a young Jew at the Nablus Gate and distributed the documentation of the incident on the Tiktok social network.

Suilem pleaded guilty and was convicted in a plea deal, Judge Rafi Carmel ordered him to compensate the young man with NIS 18,000, and sentenced him to six months probation if he repeated the offense.

"The defendant chose to perform the acts during a tense and very explosive period in the state and in the city of Jerusalem in particular, against the background of Operation The Wall Guard.

It should be noted that Suilem has a criminal background, in the past he was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment for arson, and he carried out the assault while a criminal case was opened against him in another matter.

According to the indictment, the incident took place in April 2021 at the beginning of Operation Wall Guard. Suilem sat with his friends around seven in the morning in the Nablus Gate plaza and told them that he was preparing to pour a cup of boiling coffee on a Jewish man who would pass by. They bought hot coffee and waited for a person with a religious-Jewish appearance to pass by. Shortly afterwards the complainant passed by, wearing a dome with a Star of David. Suilem and his friends began teasing him, shouting insults and taking pictures of him. Suilem bypassed him and then threw the cup of boiling coffee at him. As a result, the complainant suffered first-degree burns to the neck and was taken to hospital.

Suilam's defense attorney claimed he was addicted to alcohol and had a psychiatric background and was not taking his medication and asked the court to mitigate his sentence.

Judge Carmel noted that in ideological offenses reduced weight is given to personal circumstances, emphasizing the lack of responsibility of Suilem and the disregard for criminal proceedings.

"The probation service survey shows that he does not take full responsibility for these acts, does not express internalization of the invalidity of them, his position is victim and he does not express empathy towards the victim," Carmel wrote.

"In the circumstances of the case the punishment should be significant, condemning the acts and sending a message of deterrence to the individual and the many."

Following the decision, Advocate Nail Zahalka, representing Suilam on behalf of the Public Defender's Office, said: "We are studying the decision and will consider continuing our steps."
