In reality, talks during this first visit by a head of government since the February 1 coup are expected to be of limited scope, in a country on the brink of civil war.
No meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi
In a joint statement, the new strongman of Burma indeed announced a cease-fire until the end of the year 2022. But this commitment will very probably remain ineffective: decided unilaterally by the junta, without the presence of the opposition, it concerns only ethnic armed groups, guerrillas that have raged along the Burmese borders since independence in 1947.
