District - By 2033, every German driving license issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license.

A considerable proportion has already been processed in the Starnberg district office.

A total of around 90,000 copies will be processed there as part of the campaign.

In order to avoid overloading the driver's license offices involved in the exchange campaign and long waiting times, the exchange takes place according to a press release from the Starnberg district office in a staggered procedure with exchange periods.

The exchange periods are based on the year of birth for "paper license" and the date of issue for previously unlimited card driving licenses.

Anyone who does not exchange their driver's license must expect a fine

The first driver's licenses will expire on January 20, 2022.

The old "paper driving licenses" of drivers born between 1953 and 1958 are affected. If you forget to renew your driving license in good time, you may have to expect a fine.

It is currently still being clarified whether there will be transition periods.

Problems with old documents can also arise abroad.

An expiry date means that the document is valid, but not that the driver loses his driving license.

Here are some deadlines: before 1953 exchange by January 19, 2033;

1953 to 1958 exchange until January 19, 2022;

1959 to 1964 exchange until January 19, 2023;

1965 to 1970 can be exchanged until January 19, 2024;

1971 or later can be exchanged by January 19, 2025.

Currently 400 applications per week in the Starnberg district office

In the Starnberg district, more than 6,000 driving licenses to be exchanged are expected in the first phase.

A significant proportion of this has already been processed.

The Citizens Service in the Starnberg District Office currently receives around 400 applications per week.

In total, around 90,000 driving licenses are expected to be exchanged in the Starnberg district.

The new EU driving licenses are valid for 15 years.
