Booster vaccinations are currently being administered in many places.

In the eyes of the Moderna managing director, a fourth vaccination will probably also be necessary.

Munich - In many places, people are currently being vaccinated against the corona virus for the third time.

The booster or booster vaccinations offer improved protection against the virus and thus prevent a dramatic increase in the number of infections.

However, many experts are already emphasizing that there will probably not only be a third vaccination for a final end to the pandemic.

The managing director and co-owner of the vaccine manufacturer Moderna, Stephane Bancel, thinks another wave of refreshments in the fall of this year is very likely.

Corona pandemic: Moderna boss believes further vaccinations are necessary

Even if there were extensive immunity against the omicron variant, argued Bancel to the Arab news broadcaster

Al Jazeera

, an additional vaccination would still be necessary. At the same time, the new mutant of the coronavirus could move the world towards an endemic phase of the pandemic, said the 49-year-old Frenchman. Due to the high infection rate of the variant, as many people as possible would come into contact with the virus, but it is still unclear how long the protection lasts after a current booster vaccination.

The fact that further variants and mutations of the virus could emerge does not make the prediction easier either.

"If we assume that the omicron variant means an acceleration to the endemic phase, I still believe that we will still need booster vaccinations."

The booster vaccination campaign is currently in full swing.

Corona in Germany: Booster vaccinations are well received

The first booster vaccination campaign has so far been very well received in Germany.

The goal first formulated by Chancellor Olaf Scholz in mid-November of vaccinating 30 million people against the coronavirus by Christmas of last year was met.

Vaccine manufacturers such as Moderna and Biontech announced last year that they would work on adapting their preparations.
