History in the U.S. Navy:
Captain Amy Bornschmidt was appointed last week to head USS Lincoln, and is the first woman in history to serve as a nuclear aircraft carrier - in the United States and in general.
"There is no greater sense of responsibility than to know that the lives of people who have chosen to defend the nation have been entrusted to you," the senior officer said ahead of the Lincoln voyage, and with it the ships accompanying her, to the Indian Ocean.

Bornschmidt previously commanded a U.S. Navy attack aircraft fleet, and served as Lincoln's chief of staff.
She also has more than 3,000 flight hours during her career.
The group of ships accompanying Lincoln contains a missile patrol, and four destroyers.
In addition, it has advanced aircraft on board - including the 35-F.
