West African states adopted "
very harsh
" sanctions on Sunday (January 9th) due to the non-respect by the ruling junta in Mali of the February deadline for elections bringing civilians back to the head of the country , a participant in a sub-regional summit told AFP.
The leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have adopted measures comparable to those taken after the August 2020 putsch, the senior official said on condition of anonymity while waiting for the formalization of measures.
The ECOWAS then imposed the closure of the borders of the Member States with Mali as well as an embargo on trade and financial exchanges, with the exception of basic necessities.
