Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed that failure to reach an agreement on security guarantees with the United States and NATO will push Moscow to resort to other means to ensure the necessary balance of forces and deter competitors.
"NATO has declared the indivisibility of the West's security, but this misinterpretation will force us to resort to other means to ensure the necessary balance to deter the opponent in the event that the required and urgent agreement on legal guarantees is not reached," TASS news agency quoted Ryabkov as saying today.
“It would be naive to expect progress on issues of security guarantees in upcoming talks between Russia, the United States and NATO in light of the public position of the Western partners before the meeting and immediately before the start of contacts,” Ryabkov added.
Ryabkov expressed Russia's disappointment with what the United States and Brussels are saying before the security talks in Geneva scheduled to start today.
Russia and the United States are holding talks today and tomorrow in Geneva on Moscow's proposals on security guarantees.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the need for negotiations with the United States and NATO to reach security guarantees for his country.
