The so-called "Amigo Affair" had cost Max Streibl (1932 to 1998) the office in 1993 and estranged him from his party.

On Sunday, Bavaria's top government in Oberammergau remembered the work of the former Prime Minister, who would have turned 90 on January 6th, at a memorial ceremony - much to the delight of a grateful Streibl family.

Oberammergau

- When the gigantic Prime Minister stands in front of little Irmingard Streibl, she is overwhelmed by her feelings. "I didn't think you were thinking of my husband," she exclaims through tears. “We haven't thought enough of him,” replies Markus Söder (CSU) and takes the hand of the grateful widow of the former Bavarian Prime Minister Max Streibl. Söder and son Florian Irmingard then take Streibl to the grave of their husband, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on Epiphany. A clear and almost symbolic sign of reconciliation that was set on Sunday at the instigation of the State Chancellery in the Oberammergau cemetery 23 years after Streibl's death.

Söder left no doubt about this in his speech: "We bow in gratitude, awe and respect for Max Streibl," said the head of government.

"He will always have a strong place of honor for me." Another touched widow breathed: "Thank you."

Because she and her family know only too well that in the wake of the so-called “Amigo Affair”, the resignation forced by CSU party friends in May 1993 really nagged Max Streibl.

The thoroughbred politician from the Ammertal has probably never got over him.

Especially since he was pushed to the political sidelines with full force.

"That was his life," says Irmingard Streibl, referring to the creative skills of her deceased husband, who was one of the top staff in the Bavarian State Cabinet for a quarter of a century in the atmosphere of the CSU over-father Franz-Josef Strauss (1915 to 1988) - initially as an environmentalist (1970 to 1977), then as Minister of Finance (1977 to 1988).

We thought too long and too little about Max Streibl's performance

Prime Minister Markus Söder

After the surprising death of Strauss, the versatile Streibl moved to his place. A turning point in Bavarian post-war politics. "Many believed at the time that it was the end of the CSU and Bavaria," recalled Söder. But the political legacy of "FJS" quickly belied all critics and skeptics. As the model father of the state, Max Streibl ruled the Free State powerfully and with far-sightedness. "He was not only a devout Catholic, he also loved Bavaria." For Söder, who was accompanied by his Vice Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters), State Chancellor Florian Herrmann (CSU) and State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU), it is undoubtedly clear : "Max Streibl has written himself down in history as one of the greats." One who is now again held up by his party.

By the way, the parallels between him and Söder are astonishing: The latter's birthday is on January 5th, Streibl on the 6th of this month. So both are the zodiac sign Capricorn, whose strengths are discipline, responsibility, ambition and humor. At the same time, Söder pointed to an almost identical career path: Both were state chairmen of the Junge Union, both plowed the environment and finance departments in the state government before they were appointed prime minister. Admittedly, the power-conscious Söder would certainly like to prevent a forced resignation at all costs.

What Florian Streibl, who, after his father's dismantling, had a steep career in state politics as their parliamentary group leader, was probably the most delighted at the memorable celebration at the cemetery, was the admission of the incumbent Bavarian Prime Minister.

Söder concluded self-critically: “We thought too long and too little about Max Streibl's performance.” A realization that came late, but not too late.
