Seeshaupt - Florian Krauss from the Yacht Club Seeshaupt (YCSS) won the world championship title at the Youth Sailing World Championschips with his partner Jannis Sümmchen.

“I think we have just won gold,” the helmsman Florian Krauss called out to his bowman Jannis Sümmchen.

A few moments later the assumption was confirmed when the cheering team of coaches drove towards the sailors in the motorboat, and both of them jumped for joy into the Gulf of Oman.

“That was our last regatta in the 420.

Until the last race, it was not certain that we would finish our time together in this class with a gold medal, ”says Krauss, who lives in Munich.

The 18-year-old helmsman of the 4.20 meter long sailboat and his team partner Sümmchen from the Yacht Club Chiemsee won the youth world championship title in Oman.

After the German championship title in Kiel last year, the appearance at the World Cup is the greatest success in the career of the Bavarian sailing duo.

Arrived at the summit

On the last day of the competition, the 18-year-olds took second place and set themselves apart from the rest of the field with four points. Second place in the field of 22 boats went to the Spanish team led by Ian Clive Walker March and Finn Dicke. Krauss and Sümmchen crowned a joint career in the youth field, which began in 2018 and ended in 2021 at the summit of sailing - as German champions and world champions. After Nils Sternbeck's vice world championship in 2013 in the Optimist, this was "another historic success" for the YCSS youth sailors, emphasized Walter von Schorlemer, youth leader of the Seeshaupt yacht club

It is not yet clear whether Krauss and Sümmchen will continue sailing together.

"We will now have to change trains, if we want to sail 470s in the future, we have to split up and look for a partner for a mixed team," said Krauss.

"Maybe we'll both switch to the Olympic 49er together."
