Solar water heater or electric water heater? The right choice for winter Israel today

When should you prefer an electric heater over a solar water heater? What does the collector receive? And how do we get through the winter without an excessive electricity bill?

It is estimated that over 90% of homes have solar water heaters, but the efficiency of solar water heaters is questionable in tall buildings (over eight stories) and in buildings where there is a penthouse.

Also, in particularly old apartments with old tiled roofs it is impossible to install solar panels on the roof without replacing the tiled ones.

Replacing the shingles will be expensive, so in most cases it will be more lucrative to simply install an electric heater.

Also, the cost of installing a solar water heater is an expensive affair, and in rented apartments the landlord is not always willing to invest just so that his tenants will save on the electricity bill.

How much does it cost?

Installing a standard electric heater costs NIS 1,300 to NIS 1,800, while installing receivers and a solar water heater will cost about NIS 2,500.

Roughly speaking, within about three years the price gap is affordable, and then you actually start saving relative to the initial expense.

How to choose an electric heater?

Electric and solar boilers come in several different volumes: 60 liters, 80 liters, 120 liters, 150 liters and 200 liters.

An average shower uses 40-30 liters of hot water, so a couple can make do with an 80-liter boiler and a family of five with 150.

How to choose a solar water heater?

Some companies give a five-year solar water heater warranty and some give between 9-10 - they are recommended.

Long warranty indicates the quality of their product.

If you have chosen a solar water heater, it is important that you are familiar with the term "solar collector" - the body that heats the water in the boiler.

Usually the installation of solar panels is done together with the installation of the solar water heater itself, then the price of the collectors is weighted within the price of installing the boiler, but sometimes it is done separately.

The price of a collector is determined according to two main parameters - size and company.

The larger the boiler volume, the larger the collector.

Prices (including installation):

Solar collector for an 80-liter boiler: NIS 1,900-1,600;

Solar collector for a 150 liter boiler: NIS 2,500-1,900;

Solar collector for a 200 liter boiler: NIS 3,300-2,800.

Finally, whether you choose a solar water heater or an electric water heater, make sure that you choose a skilled and experienced professional who will give you a responsibility for the work and give you peace of mind for a few years.
