Africa has recorded a total of more than 10 million cases of coronavirus, according to figures from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the continent (Africa CDC), which depends on the African Union (AU), consulted on Sunday by the 'AFP.
Data released by the African Centers for Disease Control showed that as of Saturday, 10,028,508 cases had been reported by the 55 African Union member states since the start of the pandemic.
A total of 231,157 deaths have been recorded, the CDC said.
Infections have skyrocketed since the Omicron variant was discovered in South Africa in late November, prompting a number of countries on the continent to impose further restrictions.
However, immunization in Africa, which numbers nearly 1.2 billion people, has been low, due to limited access to vaccines and reluctance towards vaccines.
