The woman who rescues sexually abused girls Israel today

2022-01-09T15:21:21.823Z

Amid the upheaval of sexual assaults in the ultra-Orthodox community, there are increasing inquiries to the "Shirat Halev" organization, which takes care of girls who have left the ultra-Orthodox sector for rehabilitation and a warm home.

It is impossible to ignore the upheaval going on in the ultra-Orthodox sector these days.

Yael Horowitz's phone call, the director of the "Shirat Halev" association, keeps ringing.

Dozens of inquiries are received daily.

Horowitz finds herself helping ultra-Orthodox young women around the clock.

For some she rents apartments, for others she finds temporary solutions in hostels.

"You can only deal with the dark, we choose to deal with the light and help as many injured girls as possible to get out of the crisis," Horowitz shares.

Detached from home, rolling between friends, sleeping in public gardens, stairwells, and anywhere that could serve as a place to spend the night and they will do almost anything to find a place to spend the cold night.

The girls are in great and very great mental distress.

Street life exposes them to drug use, prostitution and suicide.

They most often come to the street due to domestic violence, sexual assault, incompatibility with the rigid system in which they find themselves or a crisis of faith, and are simply alone without any supportive environment.

"The ultra-Orthodox society sees them as type D. Many are thrown out of the house so that they do not 'spoil' their younger siblings or disgrace the family. The street becomes a home for them, and they reach it with the innocence of babies who do not know the world and get into dangerous situations."

The "Song of the Heart" association was founded by Horowitz about five years ago and so far has helped many girls get out of the street.

Leaving the street is a process that requires personal and enveloping accompaniment.

The girls are given a warm bed and join the house of which they become a part.

The rehabilitation process is accompanied by professionals who give them a broad therapeutic envelope and tools for independent living.

Horowitz did not plan her life that way.

An ultra-Orthodox woman from Jerusalem, whose phone rang one evening and there was a girl on the line who in tears asked for a place to sleep.

She has not been able to stand aside and since then she has dedicated her life to these "transparent" daughters of whom she serves as a mother.

"The name 'Heart Song' comes from the fact that each one has its own uniqueness, its own song and its own way, we treat each one as a unit in her world," Horowitz explains.

Horowitz currently rents apartments for the girls throughout Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh and Petah Tikva, and referrals keep coming to her.

"My head keeps thinking about what will happen to those girls for whom we have not yet found a roof over their heads," Horowitz shares.

"

Yael saved my life. I rolled on the streets for months, every few days I would find another friend to sleep with, until I had no more friends and started sleeping on benches in the gardens," Rebecca honestly shares, "I do not want to think where I was now if not "I would come to Yael's apartment. Yael helped me rebuild my life. Today I study law and work in a tidy job."

With Reut, the situation is a little different: "I lost my best friend, just because I did not have a home," says Reut in tears, "If Yael had come to her on time, she would have been sitting with us now. Indifferent. "

Horowitz does not think to stop for a moment.

"I receive dozens of inquiries every day. I have no heart to refuse girls who need a bed and a warm home. I turn to the heart of the people of Israel, we are a merciful people. Help me help dozens of other girls who are on the street."
