(CNN) -
Michael Lang, famous co-creator of the Woodstock music festival, died on Saturday, CNN learned.
He was 77 years old.
Lang died of "a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York," according to a family statement provided to CNN by Michael Pagnotta, a longtime friend of the family.
50 years later they publish unpublished images of Woodstock, the festival that defined the counterculture in the United States
"He is survived by his wife Tamara, sons Harry and Laszlo and daughters LariAnn, Shala and Molly."
Lang was only 24 when Woodstock was held in August 1969 in New York's Catskill Mountains.
He also co-founded and produced the Woodstock 50 festival scheduled for 2019, but that event was canceled.
