Authorities in Nigeria said today (Sunday) that gunmen killed at least 200 people in a series of raids in the northwest of the country last week. The massacre, which according to local residents was carried out by gunmen riding motorcycles, inflicts a severe blow on the authorities' efforts to restore order in the area.

Shepherds and farmers in northwestern and central Nigeria have been fighting for years for access to land, but some of the groups have evolved into criminal organizations known as "bandits", who murder, loot and kidnap civilians. The Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Sadia Omar Farouk, said the attacks in Zampera province were "shocking and tragic". It has provided the first official death toll since first details of the events began popping up yesterday morning.

"More than 200 people were buried following a bandit invasion," she said in a statement confirmed by her spokeswoman.

"We also take care of the displaced, hundreds of whom are fleeing their communities," said the minister, who added that aid had been sent to Zampra.

She said more than 10,000 people had been displaced from their homes when their homes were "destroyed by criminals, and dozens more are still missing."

Residents who spoke to AFP said yesterday that the gunmen raided the Anka and Bukium districts for two days, killing at least 140 people.

A resident of one of the villages said the attackers shot "anyone who happened to be in their way".

On the other hand, Blue Matwala, the governor of the state of Zempra bordering Niger, downplayed the scale of the violence and said yesterday that only 58 people had been killed.

Metula imposed restrictions for nearly three months last year, shutting down communications services, freezing fuel sales and closing cattle markets in an attempt to weaken the robbers, but the attacks continued.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Bohari has condemned the attacks on Saturday as "an act of despair on the part of mass murderers".

"We are very determined to smoke and destroy these outlaws," said the 79-year-old former general, who is also battling a more than a decade-long jihadist uprising in the northeast of the country and separatist unrest in the southeast of the country.

On Wednesday, the government officially tagged the robbers as terrorists, saying it would help impose tougher sanctions on them, but commentators say the move is meant to allow the military to deploy more resources in the northwest.
