France condemned Monday, January 10 the "
parody
" of the trial which led to a new conviction of the former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, this time to four years in prison.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner, under house arrest since the military coup of February 1, 2021, was notably found guilty on Monday of illegally importing walkie-talkies, according to a source familiar with the matter. Aung San Suu Kyi, 76, had already been sentenced in December to four years in prison for violating restrictions on the coronavirus, a sentence reduced to two years by the generals in power. The coup has plunged the country into chaos. More than 1,400 civilians have been killed by security forces, according to a local NGO, and anti-junta citizen militias have taken up arms across Burma.
In unison with the EU, France calls for a "
political dialogue involving all the parties to the conflict
", "
the immediate cessation of attacks perpetrated by the army against civilian populations
" and the "
unconditional release of all political prisoners held since February 1, 2021
”, indicated Anne-Claire Legendre.
"
France continues to give its full support to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)
" for the implementation of its five-point plan for an immediate end to violence in Burma , which "
includes the implementation of a broad political dialogue
," added the spokesperson for the Quai d'Orsay.
