Ora Herzog, the mother of President Yitzhak Herzog, passed away last night (Monday).

Herzog, 97 at the time of her death, was a prominent public woman and social and environmental activist for many years and the founder of the "Council for a Beautiful Israel."

Herzog, the wife of Sixth President Haim Herzog, will be buried alongside her husband in the plot of the nation's greats on Mount Herzl.



"The President's House asks the general public and the media to allow the family to gather in mourning during these hours and to avoid contacting the family members as directly as possible," the President's House said.



Prime Minister Naftali Bennett paid tribute to Herzog: "Together with all the people of Israel, I sadly received the news of the death of Ora Herzog, the mother of the President and wife of President Haim Herzog. Ora was a public woman and social activist who loved her people and her country. "To Tiferet, while constantly working for the public and society in Israel. My deepest condolences to the President of the State and to the entire Herzog family. May her memory be blessed."

Ora Ambash, "I believe in complete faith" (later: Herzog) was born in Egypt to her parents who were born in Jaffa and Motza. Her parents Leah and Simcha Ambash had four children.

Her older sister, Susie Stone, was the wife of former Foreign Minister and diplomat Abba Stone.



Laura and Haim Herzog have four children: Adv. Yoel Herzog, Brigadier General Michael Herzog, Ambassador of Israel to Washington, Yitzhak Herzog, President of the State of Israel, and Ronit Herzog, a clinical psychologist, eleven granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.



From 1993 to 1983, her husband Haim Herzog served as Israel's sixth president.

Her life's work was the establishment and leadership of the "Council for a Beautiful Israel", the first environmental organization in the country, which she led voluntarily for 40 years.

At the end of her husband's presidency, she held various positions, including: Chairman of the Public Committee for the Fiftieth Anniversary, Member of the Plenum of the Broadcasting Authority, Member of the Public Advisory Board for the Lottery, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Tel Aviv Museum, Chairman of the Friends of Schneider Hospital and was defined as the "International President-Emeritus" of the "Council for a Beautiful Israel".



After the death of her husband, the president in 1997, she founded and headed the Yad Haim Herzog Association, to commemorate his work and legacy.
