Parthenon: Italy does not say no to the return of a fragment of the frieze

An agreement was concluded with Greece to lend a fragment of the monument purchased by the Archaeological Museum of Palermo in 1820. The first step towards a final restitution.

Since 1984, the Greek government has asked the British Museum to return the 12 statues and 15 metopes representing more than half of the sculpted decoration of the Parthenon, and 75 meters of the interior frieze of the temple.

In October 2021, Unesco urges the English museum to return the works to it.

Sicily has decided to take the lead, following an agreement negotiated for 10 years with the Greek government.

On January 7, she sent to Athens the only part of the Parthenon that she held: the fragment of the frieze representing the foot of a goddess - of Peitho or perhaps even of Artemis seated on a throne -, s' escaping from the drape of her dress.
