Skiing in Auron: resort, ski pass, area, new addresses ... Our guide for winter 2021/2022

SOUTH ALPES - The "sport chic" resort of the Côte d'Azur, which has 135 km of slopes, has reached a milestone with the opening of a 5-star hotel complex.

The last kilometers to arrive in Auron, in the Tinée valley, allow you to gaze at an open site bathed in sunshine. The resort, spread over a vast wooded plateau at an altitude of 1,600 meters, is dominated on one side by a mountain range where the slopes are located and on the other overlooks the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. The resort and the village are linked to the ski area by ski lifts and occupy a special place in the high country of Nice. Nice is located 1h45 from Auron, which puts the destination at 3:40 from Marseille by train and less than 4 hours from Paris Orly by air.

The sport chic positioning of the resort, which was struggling to assert itself five years ago, is taking on consistency with the completion of the first phase of a 5-star

Le Monde des Neiges

building complex .

The ski area does not suffer from comparison with its high Alpine or Savoyard neighbors both in terms of its size (135 km of slopes) and its sportiness (8 black slopes, 15 red, 17 blue but only 3 green).

The lower part of the domain winds through the forest while the ridges and summits, flirting with the 2,500 m in altitude, reveal a wide panorama of the Mercantour massif.

The 1312 m of continuous vertical drop between the top of Las Donnas and the bottom of the slopes, mean that the Côte d'Azur resort is organizing the French alpine skiing championships (23-25 March).

The Auron ski area, staggered from 1600 to 2450 m, has 8 black, 15 red, 17 blue and 3 green slopes.

In contrast, the Family Park and the snow front are popular with apprentice skiers. The Sauma Longue sector requires a good level with the sequence of a red and a black (high plane) on one slope and offers an escape ski on the other. The areas of Demandols and Lieuson offer wild skiing, far from any ski lifts. Fans of ski touring will find two beautiful tracks in the forest while skiers who wish to extend the day after the slopes have closed will appreciate the new illuminated Colombier piste.

The après-ski in its well-being version is reinforced this winter with the opening of a water park in the heart of the resort. To continue enjoying the great outdoors, snowmobiling and mushing activities reveal the wild side of the plateau. Families with young children appreciate the many possibilities of this Family plus labeled resort, in particular the secure toboggan run or the ice rink transformed into a pétanque area on ice at certain times. The après-ski in its gastronomic version takes on another dimension with the scheduled opening of five restaurants managed by Michelin-starred chef Bruno Oger within the

Le Monde des Neiges resort.

Holidaymakers who come during the February holiday period can associate their stay with a parenthesis on one of the winter festivals of the Côte d'Azur: Nice Carnival, Lemon Festival in Menton or Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu .

Our favorite tracks

The ski area has 135 km of slopes.

Plans on the comet

The

black slope of the

Iglière rock

at the start of the Bercha summit is recommended by “local legends” who like its player profile.

The route in the forest requires you to control your speed by cutting tight curves on the sections of the slide and forced to switch to slalom turn mode in the walls.

During the breaks, because it is necessary, admire the magnificent viewpoints over the valley.

In contrast, the

blue Bouchiet slope

starting from the top of Chavalet compiles everything the area can offer in terms of fun skiing: a big drop in height, a section on the ridges to enjoy the panorama and a gradual dive into the mountains. larches to the sunny snow front.

On the Chastellarès plateau, in the middle of the slopes but accessible on foot, we fall for Le Blanchon 1600 and its large terrace.

About 40 €: starter + main course or main course + dessert.

Le P'tit Flocon, located in the central square of Auron, is appreciated for its traditional cuisine, its welcome, its prices (menu at € 18) and its slate menu.

Have to do

Below, the small alleys of the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, its colorful facades and its seven chapels are worth a detour.

This thousand-year-old village is linked to the ski area by the Pinatelle cable car and to Auron by shuttle.

The civil and religious buildings are perfectly maintained, some like the neoclassical church of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée are classified as historical monuments.
