At the end of February, beginning of March - Chancellor Olaf Scholz set this goal for the introduction of a general compulsory vaccination against Covid-19.

But the schedule can hardly be kept.

Politicians still need to talk about whether, when and how vaccination is mandatory.

The clear majority in the population still agrees: Most Germans would welcome a general compulsory vaccination.

This is shown by a current survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of SPIEGEL.

Accordingly, around 64 percent are in favor of corona vaccinations becoming mandatory in this country.

About a third of people are against compulsory vaccination.

There are obviously very few who are undecided on this subject.

Only 4 percent gave no clear answer to the question of whether Germany should introduce compulsory vaccination against Covid-19.

The proportion of those who answered the question with “more or less no” (6 percent) or “more or less yes” (12) is also relatively low.

Compared to previous surveys, however, consent to the general compulsory vaccination has decreased measurably.

In November and December of last year, more than 70 percent were in favor of the introduction.

For the current, representative survey, a good 5000 participants were surveyed between January 7th and 10th.

During this time, around 71 percent of people in Germany were fully vaccinated against Corona.

The vaccination rate is thus below expectations.

In order to get the pandemic under control, experts consider a vaccination quota of 85 percent for 12 to 59 year olds to be necessary.

Politicians and experts hope to be able to increase the quota with a general vaccination requirement.

Less approval in the east

Apparently, most Germans see it that way too.

When it comes to the breakdown by east and west, however, differences become clear.

While in West Germany 66 percent are in favor of a compulsory vaccination, only a little more than half in the East are in favor of it.

If you look at the supporters of the individual parties, there are also major differences.

A large majority of potential voters of the Union, the SPD and the Greens are in favor of compulsory vaccination, while the supporters of the FDP and the Left are divided.

AfD sympathizers reject a general compulsory vaccination by a large majority.

In addition, the advocacy of compulsory vaccination increases with age.

According to the survey, the highest approval rate is found among people over 65 years of age.
