This weekend the alarms went off again in Navarra due to the sudden flood of the rivers, a consequence of the rainfall in the last hours and the thaw. The rise in flow has led the Government of Navarra to activate the pre-emergency level of the Special Flood Plan, although no significant damage has finally been produced, beyond the temporary cuts in some pedestrian areas or roads near river channels . On this occasion, no damage to homes has been recorded. The technical advisory committee of the plan has decided to keep this pre-emergency level activated, waiting to verify the behavior of the Arga river as it passes through the Navarre Middle Zone, where the last floods, in December, caused serious damage to ponds and hydraulic infrastructures , which have not yet been repaired.A 49-year-old woman lost her life on December 10, after being buried under a mountain of earth washed away by a slope.

In Bera (northern Navarra), 24 families have been evicted from their homes by the floods. A race whose channel has been plugged has overflowed. The water has washed away the earth and has been able to reach the foundations of the building, so there is a risk of possible collapse. The regatta supports a flow much higher than usual due to the heavy rains registered in the last hours. This has been communicated late in the afternoon on Monday by the Provincial Government, which advances that an architect is going to inspect the property in case other measures are necessary. In the late afternoon, work was still being done to relocate the affected families in the homes of friends and relatives or in the municipality's shelter.

The Plan's technical advisory committee has classified these floods as ordinary, since the levels registered are far from those suffered this past December. The Arga river, as it passes through Pamplona, has barely reached 300 cubic meters per second in maximum flow, while a month ago it exceeded 500 cubic meters per second. Nor have the flood forecasts been fulfilled in the northern area of the provincial community, although the evolution of the Salazar and Esca rivers is closely monitored because the abundant rains of the last hours and the melting of the Pyrenees have caused their volume of water has risen above what was recorded during the December episode.

The Navarra Ribera, which was badly damaged during the last floods, has not suffered particularly significant damage this time. In the area, the Ebro is expected to reach a maximum flow of 1,650 meters per second in the next few hours, which is less than half of that registered in the December episode.

In the Middle Zone, the Regional Executive has maintained the pre-emergency level while waiting to see how the flow of the Arga evolved as it passed through the municipalities of Falces and Funes, seriously affected during the last floods. In fact, the behavior of the motes and hydraulic structures that were damaged last time and that had not yet been repaired was of particular concern. In any case, after reaching its maximum flow in the late afternoon, no damage has been recorded in the urban areas, but some fields have been flooded again.

These floods have coincided with the visit to Navarra of the Third Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, to see first-hand the damage caused by the December floods. In fact, the appearance before the media, originally planned in the town of Funes, has finally been transferred to Pamplona. In her meeting with the minister and with representatives of the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation, the president of Navarra, María Chivite, stressed that the most important thing now is "to attend to the urgency, fundamentally what has to do with the repair of motes, especially those that affect urban sections, and basic infrastructures ”. Thus,Chivite has asked the central government to grant as soon as possible the aid planned to alleviate the consequences of the flooding of the rivers in the 133 affected municipalities (of the 272 in Navarra) and in the more than 10,000 hectares that were flooded in December.

Ribera has agreed with the Navarrese president on the need to repair the ponds and hydraulic infrastructures as soon as possible to avoid new floods with the arrival of the spring rains and the thaw.
