Danish media revealed that the head of the military intelligence unit Lars Vindsen was arrested today pending investigation for his involvement in a case related to the leaking of highly classified information to the US National Security Agency and allowing it to spy on European communications and data traffic of citizens and politicians and obtain their confidential and private information.

The media reported that the case, about which the authorities published very little information, is being investigated in secret, which means that the exact charges and the nature of the leaked information have not been announced.

The scandal that was revealed in the year 2020 confirmed that the Danish Defense Intelligence Service shared information data via information cables with the US National Security Agency and allowed it to access the personal data of Danish citizens and their private communications.

On the heels of the scandal, France warned, through European Affairs Minister Clement Bonn, that US spying on European allies using Danish cables would be a very dangerous matter.

In an investigative report, the Danish Public Broadcasting Corporation, in cooperation with several other European media outlets, revealed that the US National Security Agency had bugged Danish underwater internet cables from 2012 to 2014 to spy on senior politicians in Germany, Sweden, Norway and France.

The report said the NSA had access to text messages, phone calls and Internet traffic including search, chat and messaging services, including those of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, then-Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and opposition leader Peer Steinbrück.

Sweden and Norway also demanded explanations from Copenhagen.

A German government spokesman said Berlin was in touch with all relevant national and international interlocutors to seek clarifications.

However, the United States eavesdropping on European leaders is not new. In 2013, the former contractor with the National Security Agency, Edward Snowden, revealed thousands of secret documents that exposed extensive American espionage work after the September 11 attacks, and the documents showed at the time that the American government was spying on its citizens and doing By wiretapping many around the world including Merkel's mobile phone.
