Omikron alarm: How is Lower Saxony dealing with the upcoming corona wave?

Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) has outlined the plans.

Berlin / Hanover - On Friday, January 7th, 2022, further measures in the fight against the corona virus were decided at the renewed federal-state meeting.

From now on, the 2G-plus regulation will apply in the catering trade.

In addition, the contact restrictions have been extended.

Against the background of the enormous volume of Omikron, quarantine times are also being adjusted.

Just four days later, on January 11th, the Corona crisis team announced the next steps.

Corona situation in Lower Saxony: Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) puts the country on "two very hard months" because of Omikron

Lower Saxony's Minister of Health Daniela Behrens (SPD) is reserved for the prelude to a specially arranged press conference.

The corona situation in Lower Saxony is still "very serious", the state is preparing for "two very tough months".

In the course of this, Behrens also turned its gaze to the neighboring state of Bremen, the nationwide leader in terms of the seven-day incidence.

Not least, this is the result of “heavy commuter traffic”, as Behrens notes.

In general, however, the number of infections also has a "high dark field", according to the Minister of Health.

In fact, the incidences are probably much higher, especially when it comes to Lower Saxony.

Lower Saxony adopts new quarantine rules from the federal-state meeting: Free tests are possible after seven days

"Omikron comes faster, spreads higher, but also passes faster and has milder symptoms in people who have been vaccinated," continues Behrens.

The consequences for unvaccinated people are all the greater.

“The extent and speed of infection is what is dangerous,” says Behrens.

That is why unvaccinated people should be vaccinated against Corona as far as possible.

Vaccination and booster campaigns are to be pushed forward, and contacts would have to be further reduced and interrupted.

In addition, resolutions of the Prime Minister's Conference regarding the quarantine regulations in Lower Saxony are to be implemented in the week from Monday, January 10, 2022.

The new quarantine regulations in Lower Saxony should come into force on January 15.

It is now possible to test yourself free with a PCR test after seven days of quarantine.

The background is that the critical infrastructure should not be further burdened by personnel, corona-related failures.

These include clinics, fire brigades or rescue services that are concerned about Omikron.

900,000 adults in Lower Saxony still unvaccinated - Minister Behrens calls for booster vaccinations

The measure of all things in the fight against the corona pandemic in general and the omicron variant in particular remains vaccination.

"We have enough vaccine and enough vaccination appointments," says Daniela Behrens in this context.

She calls on all people whose last vaccination was three months ago to have their booster vaccination done.

At the same time, Behrens refers to the medical practices and mobile vaccination teams in Lower Saxony, who would actively support the vaccination campaign.

And what about the nationwide compulsory vaccination, which is still under discussion?

Behrens speaks of 900,000 adults in Lower Saxony alone who have not yet been vaccinated against Corona.

This has to change quickly.

But how can this be approached?

Job-related compulsory vaccination: Nursing staff in Lower Saxony must inform about their vaccination status - otherwise they may be banned from working

A portal for the Lower Saxony health authorities is being planned, on which the vaccination status of employees can be entered.

This is to be offered to the health authorities from March 15, so that the legal requirements can be implemented.

In this context, Behrens speaks of the job-related compulsory vaccination that applies to nursing staff.

By the deadline of March 15, these employees must inform their employees about the respective vaccination status. If this does not happen or if it becomes apparent that a person has not been vaccinated, companies pass this on to the health authorities. In the most extreme case, professional bans can be issued. “Vaccination is essential when dealing with vulnerable groups,” notes Behrens in this context.

Lower Saxony is campaigning for booster vaccinations for 12 to 17 year olds - but the Stiko recommendation is still missing

In addition, Lower Saxony's health minister assumes that the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) will promptly comment on booster vaccinations for 12 to 17-year-olds.

From Behrens' point of view, there would be nothing to be said against it.

But the doctors in charge would feel better if a recommendation was made by Stiko.

Behrens is also talking about schools.

You could not tell vaccinated and recovered students to be tested daily for Corona.

This is an option that is also used by many.

There is no obligation for these groups of people.

The situation is different with unvaccinated students, for whom this mandatory test applies.

Corona regulation in Lower Saxony: "There will be no easing" - state government remains tough

We are of course also talking about the Corona regulation in Lower Saxony.

This may be adjusted again, but the political representatives of Lower Saxony do not want to have a look at the cards.

"But there will be no easing under any circumstances," notes Daniela Behrens.

Given the current Omikron situation, this is not permissible.

The statements of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) in a press conference on the federal-state meeting mentioned at the beginning had already suggested something similar.

Fourth vaccination against Corona possible - but scientific findings are not yet available

Now everyone is talking about a possible fourth vaccination against the coronavirus.

“We do not yet have any scientific expertise on this.

And Stiko has not commented on this either, ”says Behrens.

Neither the Federal Ministry of Health nor the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) would currently recommend a fourth vaccination.

However, Behrens cannot rule out this step against Corona either.

Meanwhile, two possible corona scenarios are being dealt with at the federal level.

In the worst case, the government around Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) assumes such a large omicron spread that incidences between 2000 and 4000 threaten *.

A scenario that could last two to three weeks.
