Duo University Students Participate in Global Ink Painting Exhibition Combining Art and Technology

Ink painting is one of the traditional Chinese arts. It has a history of thousands of years. Most of them use realistic details and abstract features in the distance to depict rich artistic conception.

If the quintessence of the country is integrated with technology and the static works are presented in an innovative multimedia way, new sparks can be created while inheriting the art of ink painting.

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (Metropolitan University) students practice what they have learned, and present a number of master-level ink paintings in multimedia technology, redefining the expression of ink art.

The "Global Ink Painting Exhibition 2021" is hosted by the Art Education Elite Foundation, and once again cooperates with the Metropolitan University to combine traditional ink painting with modern technology, and present works with multimedia technologies such as animation and AR (augmented reality), so as to increase the public's awareness of ink painting. awareness and interest, while continuing its artistic value and creating more possibilities.

Four students from the Department of Creative Arts of Metropolitan University, Zhang Jiahui, Qiu Kaiyu, Xu Zhuoyong and Liu Yayan, who participated in the exhibition, said that the creation was challenging and rewarding.

Add a dynamic goldfish to the work and jump out of the water

Goldfish symbolizes wealth, wealth and good fortune, and is often the subject of paintings by Chinese artists.

Taylor, a third-year student of Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Animation and Visual Effects, used 3D animation and AR technology to add special visual effects to painter Lin Rui Ting's "Goldfish Painting", bringing the swimming expression of goldfish to life and bringing the work to life .

She shared that the creation was more complicated than before, and she needed to use AR technology to create 3D effects while retaining the original style.

She said: "Although there were difficulties in the process, for example, the AR file was too large, which affected the loading time and reduced the display efficiency. In addition, the display effect of the goldfish was not as ideal at first, and there was deformation." Fortunately, under the guidance of the instructor, , she successfully solved many technical problems and was satisfied with the final product.

The actual combat strengthened her time management and problem-solving skills, and accumulated valuable experience for her future development.

Re-interpretation of the works of Hong Kong comic masters

The works exhibited this time are diverse in themes, not limited to landscapes, flowers and birds, and Hong Kong comics full of local characteristics have also become one of the exhibited works.

Crystal and Janice, the third-year students of the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Animation and Visual Effects program of the two universities, are based on the works of Hong Kong manga master Huang Yulang, and use animation to highlight the characters in the works, showing the heroic appearance of many martial arts characters The radiant spirit.

The two students worked together seamlessly, one was responsible for splitting the character layers, and the other was responsible for the background ink effect.

Through the experience of this exhibition, they can use animation programs more skillfully, and they can get an unprecedented sense of satisfaction when they complete the moment.

Before this exhibition, the two have participated in different activities and competitions under the encouragement of their mentors, and have been exposed to different creative styles. They have accumulated rich practical experience, which will be of great benefit to future development.

They hope to apply what they have learned and continue to develop their talents in the illustration and design industry after graduation.

Inspiring students to develop new perspectives for appreciating artworks

In order to let the public experience the fun of ink painting, this year's exhibition features a digital ink painting installation, which makes ink art transcend the existing boundaries.

Tina digitized the famous Chinese painter Wu Zhanchun's "Dream of Jiangnan", allowing viewers to fill in the blank parts of the painting.

“During the creative process, the most difficult thing is to restore all the texture details on the original image. I thought it was just a simple painting, but it turns out that the details and textures of each tree, window, and roof are very different , I am amazed at the thought of Mr. Wu Zhanchun!” This creation also inspired her to appreciate the artworks from a new angle, and the instructor also gave a lot of guidance and valuable advice on reading the artworks and the messages behind the artworks.

She deeply understands how art can lead to thinking, and hopes to create more infectious works in the future.

Graduation is imminent. Through this cross-media experiment, she believes that digital art will be more popular in the future, and regards joining this industry as her goal.

Liu Yayan (Tina), a fourth-year student of the Bachelor of Digital Arts with Honours in Film Design and Photography, said that this experience has brought her new creative inspiration, and she will develop in the direction of digital art in the future.

Since its inception in 2017, the "Global Ink Painting Exhibition" hosted by the Art Education Elite Foundation has been hailed as an annual event in the ink painting industry.

"Global Ink Painting Exhibition 2021" has collected nearly 3,000 ink painting works from more than 15 countries and cities around the world, and selected 500 outstanding works from them.
