European Parliament President David Sassoli died this morning at the age of 65 in a hospital in Italy, after suffering from illness.
"Sassoli died at the oncology reference center in Aviano, Italy, at dawn today, as he had been treated since the end of last December," Sassoli's spokesman, Roberto Coelho, was quoted by AFP as saying in a tweet, noting that he had been in hospital since the 26th of last month due to complications. Sassoli entered the political fray through the media portal, as he was a news anchor for Italian television stations before becoming a deputy in the European Parliament as a member of the Progressive Social and Democratic Alliance, the second largest parliamentary bloc in Parliament after the European People's Party.
In 2019, he was elected President of the European Parliament for a term of two and a half years, half of the five-year legislative term.
It is worth noting that the European Parliament will hold a session next Tuesday to elect a new president to succeed Sassoli.
