First driving: Yaris Cross Hybrid

2022-01-11T08:46:41.100Z

Toyota Yaris takes off and gets a new leisure version. We took her for a first drive

You don't have to be a great genius to understand the role of Yaris Cross in Toyota's model lineup.

Addressing the recreational vehicle segment is important and its presence is a great way to increase sales.

It is also very difficult to miss what is the recipe for producing such a vehicle.

The base is the relatively new Yaris, of course, by chance in a hybrid version tester.

The adjustment to the new requirement is performed by a height jump performed by the body, which maintains similar dimensions in the other dimensions.

So first of all the Yaris Cross is 90mm higher than its sister.

25 mm of them are in the ventral space that has grown.

The rest is a vehicle lift.

Anyone who feared that such a change would make a name for themselves in the proper proportions of the original car would calm down as soon as such a cross appeared on the street.

It looks great, with different faces, plastic protection stripes and other changes that should add 'toughness' to the overall look.

Inside the cabin the impression is similar to the same. With the same compliments and also the same criticism. The design here too looks different, up-to-date and full of such and such smart solutions. The materials feel quite basic in some places - especially for those sitting in the back. At the rear, the feeling is also a bit crowded, despite the respectable wheelbase. In front there are no claims about space and you can set off.

The hybrid propulsion unit is familiar from the aforementioned low sister. The general impression it leaves is similar. It also mentions Toyota's hybrid experience in other models. That is, when driving comfortably, the propulsion system is quite impressive and round. The performance is good, the refinement is satisfactory and the fuel consumption is exceptional. When you press the pedal into the carpet, you find a car that jumps out of place very quickly, but then the pace moderates, is less impressive and leaves an unspoken impression. Mainly because of a less smooth combination between the operation of the gasoline engine and the electric one under high load and the unpleasant engine sound of the gasoline sip at the top of the RPM range. The main power of this propulsion unit is in the medium speed ranges and excellent fuel consumption as stated.

It fits into a car with quite agile and thoughtful behavior.

The fast steering wheel, the (relatively, relatively low) weight all these translate into a car that feels small on the road, that enjoys changing direction, moving between lanes and definitely feels an effective partner for fast traffic through crowded traffic.

The suspension calibration in this version, feels stiffer and it is noticeable on a bumpy urban road.

The situation improves at a higher speed and perhaps with smaller diameter rims - the situation will improve even more.

Yaris Cross's proposal is quite clear.

Under the wings of the reputation for reliability and price retention of Toyota, it offers a playful look, agile behavior and a very efficient propulsion unit.

The lack of refinement of one kind or another will not really bother the local target audience.
