Monday was the first day of school after the Christmas break.

Despite the expanding Omikron variant, the lessons took place in person.

That meets with approval.

Munich - On Monday the time had come: After the Christmas holidays, the first day of school was due.

For some it meant finally meeting friends again.

For others, however, getting up early after their free time was even more difficult than usual. We started with a packed satchel and a sandwich.

The start of school was determined by the corona pandemic *.

Because before the lesson started, testing was the order of the day - for everyone.

For the primary school students even twice.

"In the morning we did a self-test and a PCR pool test," reports eight-year-old second grader Sophia Stenger.

“We're used to that.

We are tested a total of six times a week. "

Many children had also followed the call of the Ministry of Culture and had already tested themselves at the weekend to be on the safe side.

The fear of the omicron variant puts schools in a watchful position.

Munich: Schools open after the Christmas holidays - only one of almost 600 tests positive

Michael Hoderlein-Rein, principal of the largest primary school in Munich at Berg-am-Laim-Straße 142, calms down.

"Nowhere is a group of the population tested as tightly and extensively as in elementary schools," he says.

Almost 600 students were tested there yesterday.

Only one quick test was positive.

For the child, the mother then went to the pharmacy to take a certified test *.

“I am satisfied that the class is taking place,” says Hoderlein-Rein. Teachers and parents are also happy, is the feedback that he receives. For the headmaster it is important that there is continuity. And schools should be trusted more. “We'll do it,” he says.

Ramona Knapp (42) would rather leave her daughter Lenina (10) at home.

“It's exhausting, but more pleasant,” she says.

“Fortunately, our daughter will be vaccinated for the second time today.” Knapp is a high-risk patient and is a little afraid of falling ill.

“As soon as there is something in class, we leave our daughter at home.

Thank God she's very careful. ”The 42-year-old doesn't trust the rapid tests - especially now with Omikron.

It is not nice for the children either, she thinks.

"They are tested every third day, so many of them have nosebleeds," says Knapp.

Munich: Corona tests and mask requirement in schools - "Stressful, uncomfortable and annoying"

"I find the current situation stressful and feel uncomfortable," says Florentina Paun (39).

The children have got used to the new everyday life, but there is always something new for the parents.

"I would like better communication there," says Paun.

At least there is a WhatsApp group of the parents in which information is exchanged.

For Simone Fleischmann, chairwoman of the Bavarian Teachers' Association, too much is currently unclear - especially when it comes to corona-related school closings.

She demands: “We need a clear framework with tough parameters that are made available to the health authorities by the state government.

And then decentrally decides whether one school remains open and the other is closed. "

Sophia Stenger is happy that the class is taking place.

"The fact that we have to wear a mask is the most annoying," she complains.

Especially when doing sports.

“I'm now in the second grade and have never been to school without a mask.” On the other hand, she thinks it's cool: “With the Lollitest, we imagine that it has a certain taste.”
