If there was not the slightest breakthrough on the Ukrainian dossier on Monday in Geneva, at least the Americans have obtained from the Russians that the discussions continue. The Kremlin seemed rather well disposed on Tuesday, the day after the almost eight-hour marathon meeting between Wendy Sherman, the number two in American diplomacy, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
"This deserves a positive evaluation,"
said Dmitri Peskov, spokesman for President Vladimir Poutine. “There
are not yet very many
reasons to be optimistic,
” he added .
It would have been necessary to be naive to believe that a first round gives exhaustive results.
In fact, Washington does not intend to negotiate on the conditions set by Moscow to withdraw its 100,000 soldiers stationed at the Ukrainian border, in particular the certainty that Ukraine and Georgia will
"never"
join the Alliance.
